The 1908-09 Rose Company Post Card Set is one of the iconic sets in the hobby. With its striking green
and metallic gold,, surrounding large portraits of over 200 baseball players of the day on an embossed
card featuring crossed bats and a baseball diamond, many collectors consider it a crowning achievement
to add one "type" card to their collection.
However, there is an attraction for more advanced collectors too. Some of the rarest cards in the hobby
reside in this popular set. Possibly none more desirable than the Cy Young. With only two known to
exist, and no public sales since 2004. You can imagine the excitement of unearthing the third copy
(pictured) but it gets better!
Several players changed teams between 1908 and 1909. Some of those still had back stock available with
the wrong team name. In order not to waste those Rose Co. printed stickers with just the player name and
covered the incorrect information.
Prior to 2021 there were four known players that had sticker variations. However Cy Young was traded to
the Indians from the Red Sox between 1908 and 1909. As luck would have it the other two known examples
are 1908 Boston AL versions. The one coming up for auction in November has the sticker!
So, if you want a true one of one, of one of the most important players in baseball history.
