Stokes was a major force in his first three years in the league winning rookie of the year, a rebounding title, appearing in three All-Star games and being 2nd team All NBA all three seasons. However he hit his head in a game and was knocked unconscious. He was revived and played the next few games but then on a flight to an away game he had a seizure and was paralyzed. Never to play, or even walk, again. The uplifting part is his teammate Jack Twyman became his legal guardian and cared for him until his passing at age 36.
