Photo features from left to right Eddie Mahan, an unidentified Harvard player, and Harvard coach Percy Haughton. Mahan and Haughton were both members of the College Football Hall of Fame's inaugural class. Jim Thorpe regarded Mahan as the best football player he had ever seen, and many contemporary players and writers agreed with that assessment, including Grantland Rice, who named Mahan as his choice for best of all time in 1928. Not even seeing Red Grange play changed his mind about Mahan. This photo, while missing the caption, (there is paper and adhesive residue on the back where it once was attached) it does bear multiple stamps from Brown Bothers Photographs, the first stock photo agency. Unfortunately, none of those stamps are dated. In the copious handwritten editing instructions on the back , we see instructions to use the photo on page 20 on Oct 22, but no year is specified. Mahan and Haughton were together at Harvard as player and coach from 1913 to 1915 so we can assume the photo is from that time period. A rare opportunity to own a photo of one of football's early stars.

EDIT 10/1

Writing across the knees of the player in the middle appears to be editor's notes and says "Crop Bottom" it is NOT a signature.
