We can see just enough of a white elephant trunk to surmise this was taken between 1924 and 1927. Amazing photo is mounted to carboard and LOADED with notations, crop marks etc. On the front AL and a puddle of dirt around his feet are outlined in white for cropping purposes while they're a grease pencil "585" in the upper right corner and a bit of spray on either side of Al's image that further obscures the background. on the cardboard on the bottom are notations "Page 18" "Sil 6 1/4" and a BASEBALL stamp in red. On the reverse there is the Christie's Baseball Magazine Original 1996 Sticker and a ton of other notes. "Al Simmons" written in both and pink and blue pencil, In orange grease pencil "outline 28 picas deep" and in pink again "Used Issue 3 of May 1953 (odd for an image taken over 25 years earlier!) Also in light regular pencil in the middle and upside down to the other notations is "Al Simmons Athletics" and in a circle partially covered by residue of what looks to have been a paper caption at some point is "Conlon Photo" While we can't definitively identify this as a Conlon photo the fact that there is old appearing wear OVER the pencil inscription is decent sign. If the issue in question can be tracked down there may be a photo credit given that would be proof. Photo measures approximately 6.25" x 8" cardboard 7.25" x 9"
